Master’s Programme in Professional Educational Psychology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong

This is a two-year full-time programme which offers professional training in educational psychology through a scientist-practitioner model, featuring a curriculum consisting of an array of course work in assessment, consultation, and evidence-based interventions that are relevant to the local context. In addition, students have to complete 1,200 hours of supervised practice before graduation. This programme is offered under the Faculty of Education, in close collaboration with the professional training programme in Clinical Psychology that is offered by the Department of Psychology.

Graduates of this programme are expected to meet the professional competence and ethical standards for registration as Educational Psychologist in Hong Kong. Services provided by educational psychologists include psychoeducational assessment, intervention with children, adolescents and their families, in-service training for teachers, consultation with parents, teachers, principals and education-related administrators in both government funded and private sectors.

Programme Structure

Students are required to complete a total of 60 units for graduation.

  • Children and Adolescents with Special Needs (I) & (II)
  • Psychoeducational Assessment (I) & (II)
  • Skills Training Seminar (I) & (II)
  • Psychoeducational Intervention with Children and Adolescents (I) & (II)
  • Consultation in Schools and Community: Theory and Practice
  • Research Seminar in Professional Educational Psychology
  • Two Research Foundation Elective Subjects from the Postgraduate Scheme of the Faculty of Education
  • Two Psychological Foundation Elective Subjects from the Postgraduate Scheme of the Faculty of Education and/or Department of Psychology
  • One Educational Foundation Elective Subject from the Postgraduate Scheme of the Faculty of Education

One Research-Based Dissertation (6 credits)

  • Dissertation Research (I) & (II)

Practicum (9 credits)

  • Practicum (I), (II), & (III) (1,200 hours)

Entry Requirement

To be eligible for admission to the Master’s Programme in Professional Educational Psychology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a candidate shall fulfil the following requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a recognized equivalent qualification, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”
  • Be eligible for Graduate Membership of The Hong Kong Psychological Society
  • Pass a written test and interview
  • Fulfil the “English Language Proficiency Requirement” as stipulated by the Graduate School
  • Preferably possess a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or with relevant working experience in educational or related settings are preferred
